What is you opium???

Posted by Vince | Posted in | Posted on 4:23 PM

Yesterday I saw this old chinese movie "opium and the kung fu master". The movie was about a kung fu master that became addicted to opium and strive to regain himself. Opium weaken his mind and body, then he could no longer defend his own student and got defeated by a gang boss.
Like in the movie, real people have thier own version of their opium(drugs, alcohol, women, sex, gaming and etc. This movie shows that even a Hero have his weakness.

What is your personal version of opium in your martial art life?
What are the things that blocks or disrupts your practice?

For me my personal opium are:
My GIRL FRIEND
I stop for 4 years because practice = less time with her. she banned me from practicing. LOL she wants me to get fat. but now I practice a bit(1 hour a day in secret) to keep me fit. >_> (Don't tell her ok??)
My COMPUTER
online gaming(rohan, 9 dragons and operation 7)
MY WORK
Work= less time for Practice
Work=money(we need money to survive not like the old days where we grow our own food)
MY PSP

This are some of the thing that distracts me from practicing my art.

Now i ask you: What is your opium??

Guan Yu The Taoist God of War And Martial Arts

Posted by Vince | Posted in | Posted on 8:59 PM

Guan Sheng Di is the Chinese God of War. He was originally Guan Yu, a general of the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history (ca. 3rd century AD). Famous for his bravery, honesty, and loyalty, after his death Guan Yu became the Chinese God of War. Not God of War in the sense of a destroyer, but God of War as a protector from the horrors of war and as an example of martial valor. He is the patron of the virtuous and one of the Chinese Gods of Wealth.

I personally Pray to Guan Sheng Di for safety and for self defence. I prayed to him before I'm sparring fights and I ask him to protect us in our fight.

I remember a story told by my grand father that once in Manila when the Chinese was attacked by the Spaniard, one man prayed , then Guan Kong came down from heaven and slaughter all the Spaniard who attack them.

After the fight Guan gong told the man when ever they were attack just call his name three times and he will help them.

After the first attack the Spaniards came again but unfortunately the old man rattle and was killed.

That is why his Binondo Manila there is a large temple dedicated to Guan yu for helping the Chinese . (this is just a story it is either true or false.)

A Place of worship and practice CEBU HEAVENLY TEMPLE OF CHARITY

Posted by Vince | Posted in | Posted on 12:53 AM

Heavenly Temple of Charity is located at peace vally sub. lahug Cebu city, 6000 Cebu City

This is a Taoist temple dedicated to the goddess hua hua sian koh or Madam rose. This place is place of worship and solitude.

This is one of the places where i learn my martial art. My teacher was the late Dolorico Tan who was the caretaker of this temple. I started to train under his wing in 2002. He was a Great Master and he thought me many things not just martial arts but also thought me manners, patience and herbal remedies. He was a man as hard as a rock, with arm what couldn't be pinched, he was 64 at that time.

I missed the times we used to sit and chat at the side of the temple. I use to buy bread for us to snack on and have tea. ^_^ it was like an offer to my master. I was his only student and it felt like i was his own grandson. He taught me martial kung-fu not wushu. i never learn flashy kicks or acrobatic stunt commonly seen on wushu routines, but i was taught how to hit, defend and fight. He gave importance to individual martial skills than routine Kata or dance and physical conditioning. We used to walk up the mountains near by for 3 hours and never taking any breaks. I really miss it a lot and i miss his company. 2006 was the year he died(cancer) and i never return there until 2 year after he passed away. I had a hard time couping up with his death. when ever i go there i could not help feel deeply sadden. When ever i look at the place where he usually sat, my eyes would start to water and pain would go through my heart.

Now I still go there to train with my friends. i usually invite them and meet them there. Their gardener and i are close friends, we still spar together until this day. If you want to join us in practising self defence and exercise don't be shy to contact me on this blog free of charge(we teach for free). I usually go there on a Saturday. This place is great place to learn and find a peace of mind. And i think i will still go there until the day I die.

Have You Ever Wondered? Wushu = Sanda

Posted by Vince | Posted in | Posted on 5:22 PM

Have you ever wondered why wushu practitioners don't practise what they preach?
In a sparring session, why do wushu practitioners use sanda(chinese kick boxing) instead of what they show you in their routine?? Is it because the of lack of knowledge of combat application or is it just a dance to entertain the public? Many wushu practitioners argued that what they practise (Wushu routine) reflects real martial skill, but then why don't they use it. Karateka practise karate but when they fight they can use the skills they acquired in karate. So why cant wushu practitioners do the same? I even saw shaolin monk do sanda for sparing. Some people reason out that the moves are for killing but not for sport compitition, that the techniques shown are for killing. Yes but has anyone proven that now a days?

From a Personal point of view, I am a bit desapointed by this. It gives out the wrong impression that wushu routines are useless or fake. I hope in the future someone will use what they peach in a fight and prove those people that chinese martial art is the real deal.

Combat Style vs Combat Style Useless Debate

Posted by Vince | Posted in | Posted on 7:14 PM

When ever i look a video on YouTube about martial arts or fighting. I all ways see hate messages towards other martial arts. People write rude comments towards a martial arts system and yet never experienced the system for him/herself. Like this video i saw on youtube about Kalaripayattu(Indian martial arts), one person goes like this

"This is gay. What is with the guru massaging his nude students? Seems like a homosexual male porn video. Freedy Mercury was a western homosexual rock star who often travelled to Kerela to study your martial arts and to hang out with the indian gay community. hahaha. This is totally impractical and this shit would not work against a trained fighter. "

"good for tourism, cultural exchanges, for cocktail discussion as you try to impress the female art historian with the skimpy dress. Maybe also helpful in a fight against your ignorant neighbour but for use against a skilled fighter forget it. Without free sparring based on actual fighting experience in these modern times this shit will not work. Can these guys defend against a skilled muay thai fighter using viscious elbows or pounding roundhouse kicks or MMA skilled takedowns, submissions. not "

Quite Rude if you ask me, but every person has the right to say his opinion. A great trained fighter does not REJECT anything. He learns from other fighting arts to better himself. This type of people who is too judgemental are close minded ignorant fighters. those who says their fighting style are better than others are ignorant and too full of themselves. I for one practise many style of fighting, but i never judge or trash talk other styles of fighting. Why? because there is no perfect style in this world. In every fighting system, each has its own strong point that could enhance a fighters weak points. You have to combine, research and study methods of practise that works specifically for you. No style is above the other. In respect to MMA fighters, they are doing a good job combining what style work for them(individually). But now they make gyms and clubs that goes against the essences of MMA, MMA is a mix of techniques that an individual have that best suits HIMSELF only. What you teach may not be best for your students. The thinks you have may not be suitable for others. In every situation it all depends on the fighter himself. Styles only complement the fighter.

Time and Time again we keep on seeing people commenting that their styles are better than this, his style is better than that. But a true warrior adopts to what they see is applicable to his acquired knowledge and adds it to his list of skills learned for combat. Reject nothing and accept what works thus making you a true warrior class fighter.
